I know I shld have posted this in other section but this seem be more active so id figured id post on here. I've been trying find out more about my native american side but no one can seem to give me the answers. And all of those ancestry online seem bogus or want way too much money. Which is legit? And helpful? If anyone know. I know my great grandmother passed away in a old nursing home in 2005. Would they have her birth certifice information? Someone once told me I can know which tribe my family come from by the last name, but im not sure is this true? My great grandmother last name was thornhill. If anyone have an idea how I can find out the informations. Would be very appreciated. Thank you.

`why don't you pull her death certificate and see what info is on there, also you could write the state she is from and request a birth certificate if you know her name and date of birth. You could also check census records . You don't have to spend money if you can research it yourself.
Thornhill was on my dad's side of the family and they came from Ireland..

`Hi Redvixey and Squinto,
The Mormons have great resources available as far as tracing your geneology, I am not sure what it takes to gain access to their library. There are birth certs, death certs, marriages, property records, newspaper articals, google, with google put their names in quotes to get search responses that keep the name you are looking for together, otherwise a search may come up with for example..if you are looking for a Martha Smith if you do not put "Martha Smith" in quotes your search will come up as..... Martha Doe and John Smith of Washington etc......instead of Martha Smith of Washington....., in searching on the internet the possibilities are endless, and if you get something that looks like it fits, research that piece of information, so you are researching information within the information that comes up. Try all and anything when searching on the internet, really anything goes.If you start from the newest information and follow it back into time that is the best way some say who have done it. But research all the little bits of the puzzle, because you never really know. There are good books too for beginners that will give you tips you might not have thought of either.
